Dr. Kalpana DePasquale Donates to Ikumari School for New Ablution Block
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – August 5, 2014 – Dr. Kalpana DePasquale, DO and founder of St. Augustine Ear, Nose & Throat and Avanti Medical Spa, recently travelled to Africa and donated much needed funds to the Ikumari School and its students for a new ablution block. The donation will help children and adults with access to safe and clean personal hygiene facilities. The public school is set-up for hundreds of boys and girls in the Nyeri district in the central province of Kenya. Many of the instructors are Government of Kenya teachers. Most of the students who attend the school belong to the Kikuyu tribe and are responsible for agricultural work in the region.
According to Dr. DePasquale, she and her family along with a group of international friends drove into the Aberdare National Park in the central highlands west of Mount Kenya where the school is located. Dr. DePasquale and her group participated in the Pack for a Purpose program, a non-profit based in Raleigh, NC with a mission to positively impact communities around the world by assisting travelers who want to bring meaningful contributions to the destinations they visit.
“This was our first trip to Africa. We experienced a life-changing travel safari in the region with visits to the village and students at the school who live in wild with giraffes, impalas, warthogs, buffalo, elephants, exotic birds and more,” said Dr. DePasquale. “As an American physician, I wanted to contribute more to the children than the typical school, sports and medical supplies provided,” she said. “Instead, on behalf of my family and my practice in St. Augustine, I contributed $500 towards bathroom and hygiene facilities in place of the outdoor plumbing currently in use,” she said. “Also, the Pack for a Purpose group donated close to 300 pounds of school supplies, shoes, clothing, shoes and recreational balls for sports.”
The travel group expected to meet just a few of the students and teachers at the school when they arrived on a late Sunday afternoon. However, they were greeted by children who had travelled long distances to read poems and perform traditional dances in appreciation of the contributions. Dr. DePasquale, her family and travel companions also planted trees on the grounds of the school. “We will continue our donations to the School and will plan another visit to see the children flourish scholastically along with participating in their enjoyment of the lush plantings,” she said.
Dr. DePasquale added that most of the students had torn clothes and lived under impoverished circumstances. Some walk 15 kilometers to and from school each day. “It was touching to see the dedication of the teachers and students toward their education. They were appreciative for the ability to be able to learn despite the less than ideal circumstances they were presented with. We left there with a feeling of gratitude for the simple things we take for granted like clean water, a clean environment, and the ability to receive an education,” she said.
Dr. DePasquale supports local non-profits that assist children and families including Habitat for Humanity of St. Johns County on behalf of one of her staff members Ivory Anderson. Anderson is participating in the program to build her own home in St. Augustine and is preparing for responsible home ownership. Dr. DePasquale also thanks local wounded war veterans for their service by donating to non-profits that help with medical care and other programs and services.
